Used to offset the cost of raising children under 18, the CCB can be utilized to pay for child care and other early childhood expenses. It is based on your income as reported on your tax filings.

Who can get the Canada Child Benefit? 

You must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You live with a child who is under 18 years of age
  • You are primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child

  • You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes
  • You or your spouse or common-law partner must be any of the following:
    • a Canadian citizen
    • a permanent resident
    • a protected person
    • a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month
    • an Indigenous person who meets the definition of “Indian” under the Indian Act

Provincial Child Benefits

Each province offers different child credits to offset the cost of child care. The Alberta child and family benefit (ACFB) is a tax-free amount paid to families that have children under 18 years of age.

For July 2021 to June 2022, you may be entitled to receive the following amounts:

  • $1,330 ($110.83 per month) for the first child
  • $665 ($55.41 per month) for the second child
  • $665 ($55.41 per month) for the third child
  • $665 ($55.41 per month) for the fourth child
